What does this mean?  Very simply, area patrons (Spicewood, Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay) with valid contact information, including phone, email and physical addresses, with no substantial outstanding  fines now have access to over 8,000 new items for download for a 14-day loan from essentially anywhere in the world.  The new "virtual branch" has e-books and audio-books that can be used with iPads, iPods, Kindles, Nooks, Android tablets and many, many more devices.  Use of the "virtual branch" is limited to area card holders.  Card holders outside of local area must be members of the Friends of the Spicewood Community Library at least at the individual level ($25/year) to use the "virtual branch."

Because of the number of devices supported and variety of ways the new content is downloaded, patrons are expected to become self-educated on the methods that work with their devices.  Patrons will need to download the Overdrive® Media Console TM software.  This is used to browse, select, and check out books.  Many books can be downloaded immediately.  Books for Kindle will need to be downloaded from Amazon.  A Kindle app exits that permits reading of Kindle books on  iPads.  If the books are not returned before the 14-day load period expires, the books are automatically checked back in.  Each device has separate help pages at the website.

Patron can create wish lists of items and put items on reserve.  When the items become available, the patron will be notified by mail and given 72 hours to download the book.  If you have outstanding fines or an invalid or incomplete contact information, call or visit the library to get your account in order. Card holders that live outside of area that wish to use this service will need to become members of the Friends group.  You can join the Friends group by going to the the How Can I Help page

This is an exciting and important step for the Spicewood Community Library.  To learn more, click the image to the right and above and learn about how you can become a digital patron of the library.  Get started now and watch this website and the library's sign for notices of training sessions to learn how to use the most popular devices.
